Packaging Development Manager
Background Information / Business Context
The Regional Refreshment Packaging Development Manager SEAA is part of the regional & global Refreshment organization and reports to the R&D Director Refreshment based in Bangkok. The refreshment business covers the overall responsibility for effective packaging deployment activities for Tea (hot/cold), Fruit Juice as well as Ice Cream, leading directly 3 professional packaging developer in Indonesia and coordinating the packaging program for SEAA via the regional packaging ASIA/SEAA Packnet and in co-operation with the packaging colleagues in Australia and Thailand. As regional lead for SEAA he/she will be as well the key interface to the global packaging community in the Global Packnet.
The areas of responsibility includes as key business partner to a cross functional team of Marketing, Sales and Supply Chain, Third Party Manufacturers, suppliers and other key functions: packaging development and deployment into the factory, technical management related activities like promotional support, secondary packaging and regulatory compliance and input in issues/crisis management.
Main job purpose /Main challenges of the job
Lead the regional packaging agenda for one united SEAA (South East Asia & Australasia) packaging team to drive an efficient and aligned implementation program of packaging development elements for refreshment innovations & renovations, including VIP & Blue Funnel, complexity reduction, sustainability and Packaging Excellence activities. This means setting the program in alignment with the global team and the regional R&D director and implementing it via the regional packaging community via direct and functional reporting in close co-operation with the supply management and supply chain teams.
Leading and developing a team of packaging technologists In Indonesia who deliver autonomously packaging solutions for deployment of refreshment innovations and renovations into the category as well as packaging cost effectiveness initiatives and the support of supply chain operational with the adequate level of quality, functionality, cost, sustainability and consumer/shopper/customer appeal in line with the brand requirements.
Key accountabilities / Main accountabilities
- Leads Indonesia Refreshment Packaging Development team to drive business growth & implementation of Local/regional R&D Packaging elements of the Innovation, Renovation; Cost Saving; Complexity Reduction and Sustainability program:
- Partner with global packaging R&D, regional Brand Development and supply chain to design and adapt packaging elements and implement them in local and regional supply chain as well as feeding local insights and requirements into global packaging development.
- Partner with Local Brand Building in providing technical activation/promotional support for market introductions
- Ensure regulatory compliance for packaging materials (in consultation with regulatory team)
- Explore saving opportunities (VIPs) in packaging materials, implemented together with Local/Regional Procurement and SU Teams
- Ensure the Provision of packaging material specification of local jewel projects, including managing the complexities in packaging materials sourcing
- Coordinate SEAA Refreshment Packaging Development activities to drive business growth & implementation of Global/Regional R&D Packaging elements of the Innovation, Renovation; Cost Saving; Complexity Reduction and Sustainability program:
- Provide input in terms of regional specific conditions/requirements to Global Team through Global Refreshment Packnet and ensure the Global needs and recommendation are fully cascaded to the regional packaging team
- Ensure leveraging of activities/learning within Packaging community in SEAA Refreshment
- Drive and implement sustainability road map for refreshment packaging in SAA
- Develop and drive – in co-operation with the pack community – the technical agenda on packaging for SEAA by implementing technical regional capability road maps on key materials to set us up for future technology challenges for innovations as well as sustainability challenges. This will include supplier harmonization for regional supply, supply security and supplier capability build in line with the procurement strategy. As a consequence the road map will drive as well complexity reduction and quality improvement programs. The SEAA lead will coordinate all activities and act overall as first point of contact for building the agenda to the procurement community.
- Drive and implement cost saving strategy as part of the sustainability and technical road map agenda – ensuring a synergistic approach between the elements of cost savings, sourcing, sustainability and quality.
- Build team talent & resource management to ensure an effective and efficient packaging development team
- Management and guidance of packaging development team in Indonesia Refreshment, ensuring the team has the skills and talents, procedures, resources and mindset in place to deliver excellent smoot the exection
- Works closely with the other R&D managers to develop and build the SEAA packaging capability applying packaging excellence standards with improved processes and procedures, fostering a united refreshment team spirit and talent management
- Leads and build an empowered SEAA packnet community to speaks with one voice to business partners and global counterparts, highlighting local/regional requirements and opportunities to the global packnet and implementing global best practice and packaging excellence standards

Experience required
- People/Team Development and Resource for at least 5 years
- degree in packaging engineering, chemical engineering, material engineering, chemistry or physics with clear preference for packaging engineering
- Projects management experience for at least 5 years in a technical environment, preferably R&D.
- Work experience in refreshment categories preferred
- track record in establishing contacts within Unilever and external networking
- Fluent in spoken and written English
Travel
The Regional Packaging Development Refreshment SEAA will be based in Cikarang. He/she will need to regularly travel within Asia to meet suppliers, attend Refreshment workshop or F2F meetings. As part of the global packnet meetings in Europe are possible.
